Sardarapat

Memorial complex Sardarapat is located in Araks village of the region of Armavir, Armenia. It was founded in 1968, in honor to the triumph of the Armenians over Turkish Invaders in 1918, when the Turkish troops intruded into Ararat valley and occupied Sardarapat village. The decisive battle for the Armenians took place in May of 1918 and was crowned with victory. This memorial complex doesn’t have any analogs in Armenian Architecture, it harmoniously combines the sculpture and architecture from red tuff. From the whole ensemble stands out a beautiful and high belfry, the height of which is 35 meters. From both sides of the belfry, face to face are sanding two massive sculptures of winged bulls. The belfry was built on the site of burial places of fallen warriors, and the bulls are the holly symbol of survived members of Sardarapat Battle and are called to protect the belfry. Around the complex is located a huge well-maintained park with a triumphal arch, alley and sculptures. The Museum is a scientific and cultural, educational complex, where are stored, studied and exhibited historical exhibits, referring to the cultural heritage of the Armenians from ancient times till our days. The Museum was founded in 1968 as a part of the Memorial complex ‘’Sardarapat’’ (devoted to Sardarapat Battle of 21-28 May, 1918), 10 km south-west from Armavir. The architect of the Museum is Rafael Israelyan. The main elements of the complex, including the facade of the museum, are made of red tuff.
