December 7 in Armenia is officially observed as the Memorial Day for Earthquake victims.
In 1988, on December 7, the whole world learned about that terrible earthquake. The whole town of Spitak was destroyed, the town of Leninakan and Kirovakan were half destroyed. The earthquake took the lives of tens of thousands of inhabitants.
The vast territory of northern Armenia suffered from this earthquake. All the republics of the Soviet Union responded to trouble by sending rescuers, equipment, ambulances and everything necessary to Armenia.
Every year on December 7, many people visit the town of Gyumri (former Leninakan), lay flowers at the memorial to the victims of the Spitak earthquake. In all Armenian churches around the world there are memorial services for the dead.
