The First Republic Day is celebrated in Armenia on May 28, this day is a non-working. On this day in 1918, Armenia declared independence, after centuries of foreign domination.
At the time of independence, a significant part of the counties of the Erivan province with the predominant Armenian population was occupied by Turkish army, which was in immediate proximity to Erivan.
The victories gained by the Armenian army in the battles of Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Karakilis allowed for a certain time to suspend the advance of the Turks and eliminate the threat of physical destruction hanging over the Armenian people and in this situation, the Armenian National Council was forced to sign a Peace Treaty with the Ottoman imperial government. The agreement was signed on June 4, 1918, according to which Turkey recognized the independence of Armenia within the territory which by that time was controlled by the Armenian National Council, which was about 12 thousand square kilometers, with a population of about 1 million people.
